Kensington Vision

Kensington Vision is a community content web portal for residents of the Kensington district of Liverpool. The service was developed during 2005 and 2006 and provides a mix of news, sports coverage, video diaries, and information on topics such as local issues, health and education. The main aim of the project was to develop compelling, entertaining content with the community in order to increase computer usage amongst residents with low levels of digital literacy, making stars of local people on the way (just take a look at the K-Factor videos on the site).

Few Kensington residents had access to the internet so 100 homes had broadband connections installed in them and a further 80 homes were given freeview set top boxes. In addition, community access points were given assistance to offer all of Kensington's residents the chance to participate.

Much of the content was suggested and produced by people within the community. The attraction of seeing neighbours and friends, and of getting access to useful local information, also persuaded many people with no web experience to get involved.

The ICDC project team, working with key partners such as BT and Mersey Broadband, not only provided access to the service but helped to teach the community the skills needed to take an active part in the scheme. Workshops and tutorials were held covering all of the technologies used, whether that was producing video content, creating a website or simply learning how to use a computer to access the internet.

Kensington Vision used internet and digital television technologies to bring together a diverse group of people to create a strong sense of community spirit. The project aimed to build community relations in an area with many ethnic minorities and asylum seekers and achieved this with remarkable success. Through this use of technology, people within the local community became more involved in local life and engaged more with their neighbours, regardless of background.

Steve Faragher, the project's Community Information Developer described Kensington Vision as, "an on-line community that mirrors the real community in the area."
