BBC Innovation Labs
02-May-2006

ICDC have been working closely with the BBC over the last couple of years in research and developing content that can sit across TV and the Web. Three ICDC proposals were accepted into the BBC Innovation Labs scheme earlier this year. The BBC Innovation Labs is a pilot project to develop innovative new products and services with independent New Media companies from across the UK.

ICDC partnered with 4 new media businesses based on Merseyside to take the proposals to the finals of the Labs event. The one project that met with most success was the Visual Tabloid project spearheaded by ICDC's Jim Turner. Jim worked with Martin Dobson from Easy Web Page and Andy Davidson from Seven Technology to pitch the prototype idea to leading professionals from the BBC and elsewhere at the BBC's North West Innovation Labs. Visual Tabloid was rated by the BBC as the second highest scoring project across the UK both in terms of innovation and commercial potential.

The team that worked on project are establishing a Joint Venture with ICDC to develop the prototype further and will be based in ICDC's digital media business incubator, Digitalinc. The success at the Labs for Visual Tabloid will lead to more funding and collaboration with BBC teams to build a more developed prototype that can be evaluated and tested in a BBC context.
