BBC Commissioning event

ICDC co-ordinated a day long workshop for Merseyside SMEs from the Digital Content industry to meet BBC Digital Curriculum commissioners. The attendees heard at first hand about the process that the BBC use and gained valuable insight into ways to succeed in winning work from the BBC.

The BBC's digital curriculum service is planned for launch in January 2006. It will be a free, curriculum-based, online service for 5-16 year olds, designed to stimulate learning both at home and through school, and will be particularly aimed at those least likely to succeed through more conventional educational approaches. Internal BBC production departments are being commissioned to produce content for the Digital Curriculum and part of this content is likely to be sourced from external organisations.

The purpose of this day is to provide small and medium sized enterprises that operate within the digital content sector on Merseyside with an insight into developing for the BBC's digital curriculum in order to improve their chances of successfully pitching and delivering projects.

The day was broken down into 2 parts. The morning session was delivered by ICDC and reflected on the lessons learnt through pitching and developing work for the digital curriculum. Topics covered include:

  • Writing project proposals
  • Localisation of content
  • Accessibility (ie. Applied to Flash games)
  • Digital assets management

The afternoon session was delivered by a Senior Producer from the BBC's digital curriculum team who talked about the BBC's production cycle and how external organisations are expected to work within this scheme. In addition, 3 commissioners from Digital Curriculum presented 3 tender proposals that the companies in attendance were invited to pitch for in the coming months.

ICDC works hard to develop relationships with large organisations like the BBC in order to help digital content companies on Merseyside fully exploit their talent.
